R&D Survey – Middleham Primary School
This 1970s primary school is in a picturesque part of North Yorkshire, where we carried out a localised asbestos R&D Survey. Middleham is an English market town and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire. It lies in Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales, on the south side of the valley, upstream from the junction of the River Ure and River Cover. There has been a settlement there since Roman times. It is recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as Medelai, meaning “middle ham or village”.
After reading the existing asbestos management survey, our task was to survey the roof voids only. This then enables renewal works to the roof of the school to be carried out. We found the building to be generally quite modern. In our opinion, most existing ACMs have already been removed. The roof void areas surveyed contained no ACMs.
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 set out the Duty to Manage Asbestos in non-domestic properties. If you or your business are responsible for building maintenance and repairs, then you are the “Duty Holder”. Any commercial property built before the year 2000 may contain asbestos, and requires an asbestos register. This should be visible to employees, and others who are working on site. Before a refurbishment project can begin, it’s usual to produce an asbestos R&D survey.
