Asbestos R&D Survey – “Andy Thornton’s”, Halifax.

We were excited to carry out an Asbestos R&D survey at the former Andy Thornton’s premises near Halifax.

This property formerly used by Andy Thornton’s – a manufacturer of furniture, lighting and architectural metal structures with over 40 years in the business. Their extensive workshops and finishing facilities comprised of office, warehouse, workshops & showroom. The building was due to be entirely stripped out by its new owners. While they had an existing asbestos management survey, they now needed a refurbishment and demolition survey in order to fulfil their obligations in regard to the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

Insulating board particularly was used extensively throughout the structure, so these materials needed sampling and checking throughout. After the asbestos R&D survey was carried out, the asbestos removal was begun by a licensed asbestos removal contractor. All work in accordance with the relevant legislation, the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012) set out the Duty to Manage Asbestos in non-domestic properties, and also the communal areas of domestic dwellings. If you or your business/organisation are responsible for building maintenance and repairs, you are the “Duty Holder” in terms of these regulations. Any buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000 may contain asbestos. Every such commercial building must have an asbestos register in place. The register should be available for inspection by any employees and tradespeople who may be working on site.
