Asbestos management surveys

A new client this month was Adams Foodservices, based in Bradford but with 8 sites nationwide. We undertook asbestos management surveys on all their sites, and advised on asbestos remedial works which were necessary at 3 locations.

Adams Fast Food Supplies opened its doors to the catering world back in 1985. The family-owned businesses began its life on a corner of a street in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Today it has become the UK’s largest group of specialist catering cash and carry outlets. The 8 Adams outlets serve thousands of catering customers every week.

At each site we surveyed all areas for ACMs to update the company Health and Safety files. The buildings varied with the amount of ACMs present. We also put together an asbestos management plan for each site, as well as advising on removal if necessary.

Asbestos-containing materials will commonly be disturbed during construction work, resulting in fibre release. When asbestos fibres enter your lungs, you are at risk of developing asbestos disease. How do you know if you have breathed asbestos in? There are no immediate effects, but there may be serious consequences in 20 years time.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 set out the Duty to Manage Asbestos in non-domestic properties. If you or your business are responsible for building maintenance and repairs, then you are the “Duty Holder”. Any commercial property built before the year 2000 may contain asbestos, and requires an asbestos register. This should be visible to employees or others who are working on site.
