Asbestos management survey - Harrogate Grammar School

We recently conducted a full asbestos management survey to the entire site at Harrogate Grammar School . It is the flagship school of our long-term client, the Red Kite Learning Trust (RKLT). Our aim was to catalogue and analyse all the asbestos-containing materials on the site. Harrogate Grammar School is a co-educational academy school and sixth form in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. It has around 1,900 pupils in the main school.

Harrogate Grammar School was founded in 1903 as the Municipal Secondary Day School of Harrogate. Its original premises were a collection of rented rooms in Haywra Crescent. By the time the school became a Grammar School in 1931 the original roll of 44 pupils had grown to 530, and the school had outgrown its premises. Work began on the new grammar school in Arthurs Avenue and the staff and pupils transferred in 1933.

Asbestos-containing materials are commonly disturbed during construction work, resulting in fibre release. When asbestos fibres enter your lungs, you are at risk of developing asbestos disease. How do you know if you have breathed asbestos in? There are no immediate effects, but there may be serious consequences in 20 years time.

We always recommend an asbestos refurb survey if materials might disturbed as part of a refurbishment or demolition project. This includes refurbishment, maintenance, demolition, extensions and other construction activities.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 set out the Duty to Manage Asbestos in non-domestic properties. If you or your business are responsible for building maintenance and repairs, then you are the “Duty Holder”. Any commercial property built before the year 2000 may contain asbestos, and requires an asbestos register. This should be visible to employees or others who are working on site.
